Divine Gems and Their Magical Powers
The value of gems, precious metals and crystals has grown immensely in the last couple of years. This is attributed to the discovery that they can be used for spiritual and health purposes.
The principal use of crystals in spirituality is a generator and director of energy. It’s those energies that are used commonly to cure psychic and spiritual maladies. However, what many people do not know, is that crystals, gems and metals have their own powers waiting to be unearthed. These secret powers have been found in antique writings, archeological sites and scrolls.
Ever since prehistoric times, humanity has found beauty, mystery and power tangled in gems. These were probably used in the beginning as amulets to avert negative vibes or evil. They were later used as offerings to deities to achieve blessings and fertility.
Lucky for us, today, a resurgence of the magical value of gems and metals has entered our collective subconscious.
Gold is tied to divinity, with all the Sun Gods in particular. Throughout history gold has always been the chosen metal for the fabrication of sacred images and altar decorations. Today we know that gold enhances a persons personal power, self-confidence and self esteem. In addition, due to its incredible solar shine, it is deemed a protective metal.
Emeralds, for example, with their brilliant green tone, represent our planet and the goddess Venus. The powers attributed to emeralds are increased memory, ease in finding love, and if worn on the left arm, it is said to protect travelers. No matter where I go, when I travel, I am always wearing an emerald ring on my finger.
Another travel protector is aquamarine. But this time it’s more specific to sea voyages. It is also known as a purifying gem, that aides in health problems, calming of fears and emotional problems.
Peridot is another gem with magical healing powers. It is used especially in curing insect bites, in addition to being very calming and soothing. It is said that peridot can help you sleep and rest easily.
These are only a few of the gems with magical powers. Like everything that nature offers, precious metals, crystals and gems have their special qualities. Stay tuned for more of these informative articles. I love designing jewelry and love to know everything about the magic behind the gems that I use. The other thing I adore is sharing this with you.
XOXO

Hot of the Press!
I picked up a People in Espanol at the Dallas Airport recently and was so surprised and flattered to be sharing the spotlight with my fellow friend and Ecuadorian designer, the super talented Gabriela Cadena. We appeared in a feature of the 5 hottest stars at the party that People threw for the 50 Most Beautiful, which I had written about in an earlier post. Here it is, see for yourself.
Above is the famous picture of Elizabeth Gutierrez in the gorgeous jewels from my collection, and on the next page...
Is the sexy Ilia Calderon. The dress she is wearing is from Gabriela's Fall/Winter 2011 collection, and it's white-hot.

Coral: Cool and Calm
FLOWER POWER! Rose coral and diamonds come together in this spectacular pair of unique earrings, handmade of course in 18kt rose gold. |
Coral comes in a ranges of colors, with red and pink being some of the most popular for jewelry designs. It is usually cut into bead or cabochons for use in the jewelry design trade, and its organic characteristics inspire what some call a natural or even summery look.
Although coral has been historically used by many cultures for it's healing properties, it is still used today for the same purposes. It is said to help keep harmony, relieve tension and reduce fear. These are all very good reasons to wear coral jewelry year round, but I love coral because it has, from a design viewpoint, a lot of versatility. Coral can appear, depending on the design of the piece, exotic, elegant, natural, earthy classic or ethnic. In the earrings below, you can clearly see that this is an elegant and timeless piece, with the coral adding a splash of modern color.
Delicate and chic. Handmade drop style earrings in coral, diamonds, and 18kt rose gold. |
With its exotic tones ranging from red to pink, coral complements every skin color. Nothing is sexier than a coral bracelet like then one below next to tan skin and breezy, flowing clothes.
So nice you got to have them twice! From the top: coral and diamond bangle; black Tahitian pearl and diamond bangle; both beauties in 18kt rose gold. |
If you prefer smaller pieces or are still afraid to wear a lot of color, the ring below is an option so you can at least have some coral in your jewelry box. The coral ties in perfectly with the flower theme, looking very natural and earthy, without loosing that touch of femininity. The diamonds take this piece from day to night in a flash, making this a very versatile piece.
Fabulosity! A beautiful and unique ring made of a "solitaire" coral bead, diamonds, and 18kt gold. |
Coral is much softer than other gemstones, so you do have to treat it with extreme care. Be careful around hot water, perfumes and chemicals, as coral is porous and may change in texture or color. Coral should always be stored properly, and protected from scratches or blows. Cleaning it is very simple, just wipe with a clean damp cloth, dry and store to keep its unique qualities.
Hope you are enjoying your summer. Here in Miami it seems to last forever, so don't forget to keep cool and hydrated.
XOXO

Luxe Life: DK in PB
Although Miami is my town , I love to wander around South Florida looking for inspiration and fun things to do of course. Last month was no exception, and I visited the super luxe, super fancy resort town of Palm Beach.
I was lucky to be visiting friends so they keep me clued in on where to go and what to do. We started by going to Buccan Friday night for dinner and drinks and it was amazing. This new restaurant has only been around for less than a year and has been a runaway success since it opened its doors.
On Saturday of course the priority on the list was to visit the jewelry stores on Worth Avenue. It's always smart to check out the competition and visit "old friends" like David Morris, Cartier, Van Cleef, etc.

Inspiration is not only objective but also subjective. Just being there and feeling the tranquility of this small town makes me feel refreshed and ready to design. Worth Avenue, our answer to Rodeo Drive is full of it.
From the gorgeous stores to the beautiful landscape, to the sound of the ocean, Worth Ave has it all.
After shopping of course the beach is where it's at. Even for la plage I never leave home without a hat (nobody wants wrinkles) and some bling. This weekend I wore this amazing ring from my new collection. I selected it thinking I wanted something to match the sunny surroundings I was going to be in. These gems have a very natural and organic quality that is perfect for Palm Beach.
THINK PINK! Rose quartz and light pink amethyst on 18kt rose gold of course! |
Here is a shot of the beach, which was the perfect temperature for a cooling dip after so much walking. Hope you had fun touring Palm Beach with me!
Cheers!

Birthday Girl: Madonna
From Material Girl to Birthday Girl, you cannot argue that Madonna is a cultural and fashion phenomenon. In fact, Madonna has done more for plastic jewelry and red string than anyone ever will. But it her haute fashion that she will really be remembered for, and that's why today, on her birthday, I want to do a post on her fabulous style and how to get a similar look.
If I wanted to wear something similar to the look above, I would go for this ring from my new collection.
Perennially dubbed a fashion chameleon, Madonna has had many different looks through the years. One of her most memorable ones is this one which is very telling of her love for gemstones and fine jewelry, as all she is "dressed" with is jewels.
Another great look of hers is right after she had her daughter Lourdes, when she was going for an ethereally chic look. Her simple fashions take second stage to the fabulous jewels she wore during that time of her life, where she was experimenting with subtle and feminine looks. The ring below is very similar to the color palette she wore during this period.
Madonna has had so many different incarnations, and been around for so long, that a post on all of her different styles would probably take every single one of my pieces. So here's to you Madge, keep on changing because we will be following. Happy birthday Madonna!
Cheers!

Another one of my favorite looks on her is the one below, when she was going through her Like a Virgin phase. The celestial bangles in the picture below (you can wear as many or a little as you want) are a great way to be a little vintage Madonna in 2011. I love that she was mixing diamonds and pearls, even early in her career. What style!

On the Go: Midtown Meal
In an earlier post I was singing the praises of one of Miami's top neighborhoods, the Design District, but how could I be fair to this fabulous city without highlighting another one of my faves, Midtown?
Just south of the Design District, and north of Downtown, Midtown gets its name from the crazy popular "Shops at Midtown," and is very reminiscent of New York's SOHO neighborhood. A super busy and vibrant neighborhood, Midtown hosts Art Miami during Art Basel Week. As far as the rest of the year goes, its shops and restaurants are always flourishing.
A bit trendier than the Design District, Midtown is a great place to meet old friends and make new ones. I love people watching at Sugarcane. The drinks here are excellent too, especially at the outdoor bar, which is tended by the nicest, friendliest bartender on the planet. I promised not to reveal his name, so go see for yourself.
Beautiful people and cold drinks are not the only thing being served up at this restaurant. One of Frommer's ten best new urban restaurants, Sugarcane works with local and sustainable ingredients. Specializing in raw and grilled foods, the chefs prepare most of the food on sight. As you can see in the photo below, you can see and smell what's cooking, at all times. The menu is also very marked by Latin influences, making it delicious and surprisingly healthy.
Another great alternative for a great lunch is Gigi. A great spot, that is open all day, Gigi offer cutting edge communal type dining. I love it!
Wherever I go though, I'm always wearing a great piece (or pieces) of jewelry. It's a statement every woman should make, a way to leave a mark or a lasting impression. A hot summer day deserves a cool piece like the rings below. Any of these three modern rings complements numerous outfits. I designed these to be youthful and classic at the same time. I wear mine all the time.

Mad About Jewelry
With 19 Emmy nominations combined, Mad Men has to be the hottest show on the planet. I love this show, and not just for the hot men or for it's amazing story-line, but also for its elegant and true to period costumes and jewelry. One of my favorite periods of jewelry design is the 1950's and 60's and this show does a great job at showing these glamorous trends with absolute fidelity.
Although the men are handsome and debonaire, it's the ladies of Mad Men that have that special style that everyone wants. Now you don't have to have access to costume designers to look like the ladies of Mad Men. Here are my recommendations on how to copy the looks of the ladies of Mad Men.
Betty Draper: This ice princess is always classic, always elegant. Her signature is the chic 50's spoiled housewife look. Only the classics (pearls, diamonds) for her.
Jewelry was very important in this period for women, especially for those in the upper classes. Wether an anniversary gift from a loving husband or a tiara from her debut, this type of woman was always accezorized to the nines. My suggestions for this type of look are the following:
Fabulous diamond chandelier earrings, hand made in 18kt white gold. |
Stunning cuff style bracelet of pear shaped aquamarine, with diamond details hand made in 18kt white gold. |
Haute jewelry! South sea pearls never had it so good next to morganite, rose cut diamonds, and more diamonds! All hand made in Italy in rose and white 18kt gold. Thanks Don! |
Joan Holloway: The temptress with the red hair is always wearing something sexy, so naturally her jewelry is always flashy and on trend. Probably having bought all her jewelry herself, Joan goes for super flattering gold statement pieces, mostly without stones.
Even working girls can afford some luxury. Joan would love any of bold pieces below.
Joan's classic: floral themed pink tourmaline earrings, with champagne diamonds and white diamonds. All handmade in rose 18kt gold. To die for. |
Fun and flirty, makes real flower jealous. Ring in rose gold 18kt, diamonds and black Tahitian pearl. |
Dare to be different in this hand carved natural lemon amber. Complemented by South Sea pearls and yellow diamonds, all handmade in 18kt yellow gold. |
Peggy Olsen: This subdued gal from Brooklyn doesn't scrimp on style. Even though she's a working girl on a budget, Peggy always has the right jewelry and accessories to complement her often serious outfits.
Smart and sassy, Peggy is always a fan of discrete pieces, like bracelets and earrings. Any of these beautiful pieces would suit Peggy. Take a look:
Naughty but nice. Look chic and lovely in this white and golden South Sea pearl necklace, with diamond ribbons hugging each pearl. Peggy would approve! |
Dress them up or dress them down; every wardrobe should include these beauties. White, yellow and rose gold bangles, with baguette shaped diamonds and celestial carvings. |
Well, for those like me who are waiting patiently for the season premiere, I hope these pictures and looks tide you over till the first episode in 2012.
Cheers!
Dani K
